The Philly Metro Activism Network is here to show our continued support for the LGBTQIA+ community. More specifically, we want to show our support to the youth within the Neptune, NJ school district during such a difficult time. This is a moment when visibility matters to those most vulnerable and already suffer greater risks of physical assault at the hands of discriminatory, intolerant people. We are here to be voices for those too afraid to speak, to ensure any aggressive individuals who are quick to defend transphobic and transmisogynistic comments with physical assault are removed immediately without pay and permanently barred from holding any employment involving the education or guidance of impressionable youth. This includes the alleged acts committed by the Vice Principal of Neptune Middle School, Michael Smurro, in response to and defending the grotesque public tirade of alleged transphobia by his wife, Lisa Smurro.
The Philly Metro Activism Network has been in contact with the Neptune Board of Education, specifically Dr. Crader, through phone calls and hand-delivered letters. The Philly Metro Act has requested:
The Board’s continued refusal, citing that their work cannot be made public, to update the community during this time is careless and unacceptable. It’s obvious the school district of Neptune, NJ does not have the proper procedures or policies to address these issues to the community’s standards and desires, which is highly disappointing, considering the diversity of the district is one of the highest in the state. The Philly Metro Act is requesting these policies regarding transparency be addressed as well, to increase public trust.
The Philly Metro Activism Network would like to see Michael Smurro be fired with revocation of any benefits from his Teachers' Pension and Annuity Fund and barred from any further employment in which he would have access to children.
